Direct vs. Indirect Intervention

Direct vs. Indirect Intervention

Ally Intervention can be direct or indirect. If you feel unsafe intervening directly, call the police.

Direct Intervention tactics:

State your objections. Take a firm stand. (“She said ‘No.'”)

Drive an intoxicated person home.

Interrupt or create a distraction. (Knock on the door until someone answers.)

Talk to the person directly. Speak the truth calmly. (“I’m worried because this behavior is harming you.”)

Indirect Intervention Tactics:

Call 911.

Involve a professional.

It is important to know your limitations as an Ally. You never need to intervene directly in a violent situation; call 911 instead.
